Hotarubi no Mori e, a short anime movie, by Takahiro Omori. A young girl gets lost in an ancient forest where she meets a masked spirit named Gin. They become close friends.
One can say that one of the main topics is time. Hotaru, the girl, visits Gin every summer, however, he does not age like a human being whereas she does. He noticed the passing of time on Hotaru’s different school uniforms. Indeed, both seem to develop romantic feelings to each other. Time is not the only conflict they have to confront, there is another rule: Gin is not allowed to touch any human being, if so he will disappear for ever.
The movie somehow indicates that it will end in a tragedy due to Gin’s condition not being able to have human physcial contact, but one does still hope for a happy ending. One can say that the short anime movie is a love story between a spirit and a human being, but it also contains comedic elements.
Hotarubi no Mori e is a very emotional and very very sad movie. Especially the end is heartbreaking. Moreover, the scenery is very beautiful with fascinating images of the forest. All in all, we definitely recommend the movie, but you might not be able to watch it without shedding any tears.
p.s. The movie is actually based on a manga from 2002, which seems to be very hard to find. If anyone knows where to find or buy it, please let us know. (＾▽＾) ＾ω＾
