Gin’iro no Kami no Agito (2006)

Gin’iro no Kami no Agito (Origins: Spirits of the Past) by Keiichi Sugiyama. After a failed experiment, the human race destroyed the moon. Aggressive and intelligent plants spread and destroyed most of the population. The main protagonist Agito awakens a girl named Tula from the past. For her, this „new“ world seems strange because everything is different as it used to be. The high village Ragna which is in war with the forest hears of Tula and wants her to activate a weapon her father has created. This weapon is supposed to destroy the whole forest. However, Agito wants to stop this and makes a pact with the forest to gain more strength.

The anime shows that humans destroy the plants and that the nature is fighting back. This can also be adapted to reality. In this movie, nature dominates the human civilisation. The message of environmentalism is clearly shown but also a bit too exaggerated.

The character design looks a bit weird and is not very beautiful. We do not like the style of the animation used in this anime. In fact, we prefer more „cute“ character designs. Another negative aspect is that the movie does not include any emotions. We could not offer our sympathies to any character because there is no character development at all. It is hard to care about them and they appear rather annoying. The story is a bit weird and hard to follow. For example: People turning into trees. The plot is weak and it is difficult to find any sense in the movie. There is no real point in it. All in all, it is the strangest movie we have seen so far.
