Kimi no Na wa (2016)

Kimi no Na wa by Makoto Shinkai. The movie is about a highschool girl, Mitsuha, who lives on a countryside and a boy, Taki, who has a busy life in Tokyo. One day, she wakes up and finds herself in Taki’s body. On the other side, the same is happening to Taki which means he lives in her body. However, this temporary consciousness swapping seems to happen when they sleep.

The interesting fact is that both are living in different time periods. Taki lives in the present whereas Mitsuha’s life takes place in the past. As in Hotarubi no Mori e, time also places an important role in this anime movie. However, here the focus is more on the different time periods as on the passing of time. Indeed, the passing of time is not completely neglected due to a sudden urge of finding each other: The story turns into a race of time.

The movie contains emotional and romantic elements. The whole movie is based on the two main characters who get to know each other. It also depicts the contrast between country and city life and how both seem to prefer the other one’s lifestyle. It is a journey through their „out of body“ experiences. In addition, the aspect of distance does not show any obstacle regarding love. It is not only a romantic movie but it is also filled with comedic elements which can especially be seen in the scenes of Taki being in Mitsuha’s body. The movie consists of jokes which seem to be impossible to translate into English such as the sex related personal pronoun usage (watashi, watakushi, boku, ore).

All in all, we really enjoyed watching this movie and definitely recommend it. Even though the ending is kinda predictable, the several adventures which follow the audience through the whole movie are amusing.
